Why fire claims get underpaid

The first estimate on a fire claim usually covers the burned room and not much more. Smoke and soot spread through HVAC ducts, wall cavities and attics. Water from the fire hose soaks floors and drywall far from the fire. Code upgrades, demolition, debris removal, contents and additional living expenses are easy to undercount when the carrier writes the scope by itself.

These are summaries from CMA claim files. Names, addresses and claim details are left out to protect our clients. Every claim is different, and past results do not guarantee a future outcome.

October 2022 house fire

The adjuster’s estimate totaled $215,543. Our estimator added what it missed: subfloor replacement, wood fascia under the metal, a moisture barrier on the exterior walls, full general demolition with a skid steer, and overhead and profit. That brought our estimate to $260,907. We also caught that about $30,022 in pack-out, cleaning and storage had been charged against the dwelling coverage, and we managed the contents pack-back.

Result: The structure claim reached a replacement cost value of $232,756, about $17,213 more than the adjuster’s estimate.

What we do on a Lebanon fire claim

How we get paid

There is no upfront fee. We are paid a percentage of what the claim pays, under a written contract you sign before we start. If we do not think we can add value, we will tell you.
