Why fire claims get underpaid

The first estimate on a fire claim usually covers the burned room and not much more. Smoke and soot spread through HVAC ducts, wall cavities and attics. Water from the fire hose soaks floors and drywall far from the fire. Code upgrades, demolition, debris removal, contents and additional living expenses are easy to undercount when the carrier writes the scope by itself.

These are summaries from CMA claim files. Names, addresses and claim details are left out to protect our clients. Every claim is different, and past results do not guarantee a future outcome.

November 2024 house fire, structure and contents

The fire damaged the roof trusses, siding and interior, and the family moved into a rental while the home was rebuilt. At one point the insurer’s structure settlement stood at about $146,311. Working with the builder, we showed what the scope left out: removing and replacing trusses, soffit, fascia and gutters, the metal siding that had to come off to reach the trusses and windows, permits, sheathing, and underpriced plumbing and HVAC. At the same time we built the personal property inventory room by room and escalated to the adjuster’s manager when the file stalled.

Result: Payments on the claim included $172,223 and $41,677 on the structure, a $3,534 supplement, and $162,691 for contents, about $380,125 in all.

How we get paid

There is no upfront fee. We are paid a percentage of what the claim pays, under a written contract you sign before we start. If we do not think we can add value, we will tell you.
